In reaction to the current flood of people coming into the U.S. illegally, undocumented immigrants are affecting the U.S. economy. The U.S economy is being damaged in many ways by undocumented immigrants.
Undocumented immigrants are using social services and it is costing taxpayers. The Federation for American Immigration Reform claims that $761,405,907 is spent on unaccompanied minor’s education alone. California spends 63.91 million dollars through k-12 schooling to educate 3909 unaccompanied minors. The data reveals a substantial amount of taxpayer money is being used on undocumented immigrants. This money could be going back into the local economy especially when the average undocumented immigrant only makes it untill the 4th grade, states the documentary La Cosecha. WIth this information, it is clear that some undocumented immigrants are taking money from the taxpayers in ways that are not intended by the U.S. congress.
Undocumented immigrants are taking jobs that lesser educated U.S. citizens could have. The Center for Immigration Studies claims that there are 93 occupations in which 20 percent or more of workers are immigrants. These jobs require little to no formal education to obtain the job. In July 2015 there were 20.3 million minors working(52% of all minors), ages 16-24. Undocumented immigrants are willing to do the jobs that most Americans won't do, but these are jobs that minors are also willing to do. Minors can not get a job that requires formal education so they are left with jobs which include janitors, house cleaners, fast food and many other occupations. These immigrants are competing with minors for jobs. Therefore as more undocumented immigrants take jobs from less educated citizens it is taking money out of the local economy.
Undocumented immigrants are sending money back to their home countries when that money could be going back into the local economy. Simon tomlInson claimed “Migrants working in the United States sent a staggering $120 billion back to their families last year”. More than 23 Billion dollars was sent to Mexico alone last year.” Migrant workers come to the US to escape poverty and to provide a better way of life from their family. When a migrant comes into the US without a proper citizenship they can not bring their families into the us so they have no choice but to send money back to their families. When they send money back to their families they are not keeping money in the local US economy. When migrants send money back to their home country it does not cycle the money back around in the U.S. economy.
